Improper Fraction
A fraction is a number that can represent part of a whole. A fraction, which consist of a numerator and a denominator, the numerator representing a number of equal parts and the denominator telling how many of those parts make up a whole.
For example, `2/3` is a fraction, where 2 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator. (Source: From Wikipedia).
If the numerator is greater than the denominator in a fraction, then the fraction is called as an improper fraction. `3/2` is an improper fraction. Because the numerator 3 is greater than the denominator 2.
I have recently faced lot of problem while learning Improper Fraction Definition But thank to online resources of math which helped me to learn myself easily on net.
Practice problems on improper fractions
We know that, if the numerator is greater than the denominator in a fraction, it is called as an improper fraction. A mixed number is the combination of a number and a fraction. An improper fraction can be converted into a mixed number and a mixed number can be converted into an improper fraction
Practice problem 1
Convert the improper fraction `15/7` into a mixed number.
Solution
To change `15/7` into a mixed number, first, divide the numerator (15) by the denominator (7). We get, quotient 2 and remainder 1.
Now, the mixed number equivalent to the improper fraction `15/7` can be created by, using the quotient as the whole number and the remainder as the numerator and the denominator remains same for both.
That is, `15/7` = `2 1/7`
So, `2 1/7` is the mixed number form of the given fraction `15/7`

Find the equivalent mixed number of the improper fraction `9/5`
Solution
To change `9/5` into a mixed number, first, divide the numerator (9) by the denominator (5). We get, quotient 1 and remainder 4.
Now, the mixed number equivalent to the improper fraction `9/5` can be created by, using the quotient as the whole number and the remainder as the numerator and the denominator remains same for both.
That is, `9/5` = `1 4/5`
So, `1 4/5` is the mixed number form of the given fraction `9/5`
